Question
Please help! My pom is 5 months old and I can't seem to have any luck with training her.  I have had her for 3 months now.  She rarely potties in the house, but how can I get her to anounce that she wants to go outside with out my taking her?  She also has this habit about goofing off outside before finally going potty.  She rarely seems to listen when I say comands to her too.  Last thing is...My pom has been caught eating waste out of my cat's litter box.  She also does this with other dog's waste outside.  Please help! Thank you in advance!

Answer
Hi Amy,

How about taking her to a puppy training class?  They are fun and would help you a lot.  You can get dog training books from the library.  Also, offer her a treat when she obeys a command.

Before you take her out to potty ask her if she has to go.  Eventually, she will probably tell you before you have a chance to ask.  If possible, give her sometime to play outside when you take her out to potty.  Add playtime after she goes.  Then she won't goof off so much if she knows she may get playtime afterwards.  Which is good for her anyway.

Can you put the cat litter box in a place she can't get too?  YUCK!  This is unhealthy and eating litter ain't too good either!  Eating other's dogs poop is even worse because you don't know what's in it (like parasites).  I would watch her really close outside.  Put her on a leash and keep her away from the poop.  Feed her the best quality of food you can afford.  Hopefully, she will outgrow this.

Best Regards,
Carrie
