Introducing German Shepherd pup to Pomeranian

Question
Hi,

Jessie is a ten year old pom, daughter of my previous two poms.

Last May a friend gave me the most beautiful german shepherd, Macy, a 3 year old retired Singapore Champion.

Macy's temperament and manners were exceptional and we had very little trouble introducing her to Jessie and her mother, Pulse.

Here in Malaysia we have terrible problem with tick fever, and in June, Pulse died from this disease.

Jessie was ok because she still had Macy for company.

On 15 March this year, we had to euthanase Macy due to problems with aplastic anemia and rejection of blood transfusion.

This time, Jessie is not ok.  She has never been a 'single dog' before and is acting out of character.

We have another friend with a litter of german shepherd pups, he has offered us pick of the litter.  We are in love with this breed and also need security here, excellent in the form of big dog.

My question, after this long history is:

We want to get a bitch (one reason being shepherd males often weigh more than i do!).   Jessie is quite spoilt and alpha dog type.  Do you think this is a bad gender combination, would a male fit in better with Jessie.

Also, can you give any advice on introducing the two dogs (next week!) and averting problems between them in the future.

We love our dogs very much and always try to do what is right for them.

I have also written to the German Shepherd Expert for help here.

Thank you for taking the time with this.

Regards,

Clare

Answer
Clare,

I've been pondering on your question a couple of days now.  I think that getting a female puppy is not a bad idea.  My Pom is a female and always gets along better with other females.  As far as Jessie being the alpha dog, if you get a puppy, that shouldn't be a problem either.  There may come a time when Jessie feels like she has to put the puppy in it's place, but that is normal.  An alpha dog has to establish athority!

Hope I've helped you and should you need anything else, please let me know!

Sheri
