behavior w/ a new puppy

Question
I have a male pom (Sable Prince) that is 15 months old.  I really like this breed of dog and would like to get another one.  Here's my dilemma. My husband and I work during the day and Sable is at home alone while we are working - he sleeps alot during the day even when we are home with him.  He has adjusted to this very well.  He shows no signs of seperation anxiety or anything like that. He is a very flexible dog; adjusts to new things quite well.  Do Poms generally do well with new pups?  The problem is that they would have to be alone together while we work.  Is it possible that Sable's easy-going personality could "rub-off" onto the new pup?  Also, Sable sleeps in a basket (his bed) while we are away.  Is it ok to let Sable and the new pup share the same basket when we are away?  Your input would be appreciated.  Also, the new pup will require housebreaking ,of course.  Do you think that Sable could somehow begin to have "accidents" because of the new pup? Thank You.  Tonja

Answer
Tonja,

Hello!  Yes, Poms do really well with new pups, because to them, it's a new friend.  Especially if your Pom is the only one, he should be happy to have a friend to keep him company.  It is possible for Sable's personality to rub off on your new pup, but don't expect it.  Pom's generally have their own personality, and it's very unique.  However, Sable will probably feel the need to teach your new Pup new things, and it's completely natural.  It should be fine for the new pup and Sable to sleep in the same bed, altough Sable may not like it.  If Sable gets protective of his bed, that's natural and you may want to put the new Pup his own bed next to Sable.  Lastly, it's very unlikely that is the new pup has accidents Sable will.  Once Sable has learned to "go" outside, that's it!

Now, remember, Sable may seem protective at first, but it's natural.  Introduce them slowly, and make sure they have supervision for the first day.  Give them time to get used to each other, and encourage them to play!

Hope I've helped you, and should you need anything else, please let me know!

:)
