Bulldog stomach sores

Question
Hi,
My 5-year-old bulldog has crusty red sores on his stomach and private parts area. They crust over and then the crust goes away and they are pink. When he is on Cephalaxin for several weeks, they go away, but as soon as he stops the medicine they come back again. Any advice you can give me would be great. Thank you!

Answer
This is probably a staph infection that he's picking up from his environment. He could be getting it from the area where he sleeps. Either outside on the ground or it could be from some type of irritant in your carpet or floor cleaner.

If possible, bleach all the areas where he spends time sleeping, crate, yard, kennel, and do this when he's at the end of a course of antibiotics. See if this makes any difference at all. The only other thing you might do is washing his belly area with an antibacterial soap every day but make sure you dry the area thoroughly. Put something like Gold Bond powder on the area.  All or none of this may help.

It could be a simple as his immune system letting him down at his age.
