Tear Stains/Irritation

Question
My five month-old english bulldog is starting to get tear stains and the fold by her right eye is particularly irritated. I've been cleaning her wrinkles every other day with warm water but I've been hesitant to use soap or anything since she's so young. Is there a certain ointment or soap/wipe that's best to use on a puppy's face? Also, what do you recommend doing for the irritated spot? I have been putting a drop or two of vinegar in her water dish as well. Thanks for your help!

Answer
Too much cleaning and not drying well after, that's the problem. You shouldn't have to clean his face more than once or twice a week. It's critical that you dry the wrinkles thoroughly each time. You can put Desitin ointment on them now to heal up any sore spots and soothe them. Once they're healed up, just put a thin layer of vaseline in the wrinkles after cleaning and that should help keep them clean and soft. Use a baby soap along with warm water to clean with, Johnson's baby shampoo is fine (lavender smells great!)

It takes more than a couple of drops of vinegar to do the job. The formula is 1 oz. of vinegar per quart of water.
