EBD Urinating in crate

Question
QUESTION: Hello again,
At what age generally should an EBD be "house trained?" T-Bone,at 4 months old ALWAYS has urinated in his crate overnight. When I let him out to take him outside to "get busy" his pillow is soaking wet. He has been inour family for one week today and has never had a dry pillow in the morning. He goes outside before bed, and his water is put away at 7pm. Should he be woken up and taken out in the middle of the night at this age? Any advice would be truly appreciated. I have not had this issue before with other pups at this age. Thank you so much! sorry for all the questions. Am I doing something wrong?

ANSWER: Dorothy,

At 4 months old, he probably should be able to go all night.  Now he is use to going in his crate and on his pillow, so you are going to put him in a different environment.

You should use a different crate, maybe less room.  And to not give him his pillow back.  He will be able to smell the urine and that tell him it is ok to go there.

You might want to take him out in the middle of the night until he get is.

QUESTION: Hi Christine,
Thank you for your quick response. Would he still be smelling the urine on the pillow even if I wash it right away every morning? I use Tide and was the cover AND the pillow itself. The crate he sleeps overnight in is just large enough for him to turn around. He has a much larger  crate in the living room for when he naps (he's never peed in this one). At what age are EBD generally succesful with house training? thank you

Answer
Dorothy,

He may not smell the urine, but he will probably remember that the pillow is ok to go on.

All puppies are different.  I believe puppies can be trained as early as 8 weeks old.  That doesn't mean they can hold it all night.

It really just depends on what he has learned.  If he has learned that his crate and pillow are a place to go, it hard to train him that it is not.

It is always harder to break a bad habit then to train good ones.
