Mugsy at Christmas
My Bulldog, Mugsy, is 8 years old. He has externa otitis and has been on medication for about 3 years at intervals. He was taking primor and cipro, dexameth,prednison, ketoconazole each prescribed at different visits and mometemax in his ear. I changed vets and this one gave cephalexin 500 mg 3 time a day for 14 days and gentizol for the ears. After finishing the cephalexin he is still shaking his head. He also has food allergies, he was taking Hills Prescription DD and Hills Prescription ZD. This vet recommended Hills Science Diet. I try to keep him from beef, wheat and dairy products. He has a treat twice a day that he absolutely loves, Greenies for Seniors. Can you give me info on Externa Otitis and can you recommend a food for his allergies. Thank you kindly

Otitis Externa is related to Yeast over growth and Allergies:
Otitis externa has been traditionally described using terms such as reactive, inflammatory, and allergic or infectious.
With that in mind - the foods you have your baby on are full of junk fillers. I know the Hills and Prescription diets are made by VETS and sold by VETS the ingredients will cause other problems. The food may correct one problem but causes many others. It is a very poor quality food and should be changed if possible.

old food and new food: ( old food 25% and new food 75 %) - do that for another week. Then 100% NEW food.

Vitamin E-I would like to see Mugsy go onto some Vitamin E 200 IU of Vitamin E -
just 1 per day - long term - great for healing the skin... I would give this for a few months...

Next, Please give 1 tablespoon of Pure Salmon oil per day - mix on
top of his food. you can even go two teaspoons : MUST be pure Alaskan salmon oil...this is sold in many pet stores all over the USA.

Last: As for cleaning the ears:
Try this - old fashioned and it works....
Recipe for cleaning ears: only when they are bad:
This is the best solution I have used when it comes to gucky ears. It was given to me years ago by a veterinarian.
16 oz. bottle isopropyl alcohol (or witch hazel)
4 tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 drops Gentian Violet 1% Solution
Or you can use Witch Hazel.... see below:
Mix all ingredients in the alcohol bottle & shake. (make sure you shake before every application).
Treatment: Fill ear with solution & massage gently for 30 seconds and wipe with a tissue. Fill a second time and just wipe without massaging. The dog will shake the excess out. Be careful, the Gentian Violet could stain. I use a eye dropper to fill the ear.
Treatment:
2 times per day for the first 2 weeks
1 time per day for the next 2 weeks
1 time per month thereafter
If you are concerned about the alcohol burning the inside of the ear (it could if the dog has been scratching its ear), then you can substitute the alcohol with witch hazel.
All ingredients are available at a pharmacy. The Boric Acid is usually in the First Aid section where you find the alcohol. The Gentian Violet will be the hardest to find and may need to be special ordered.
