cherry eye?

Question
Hi,

Happy holidays. I have a question about my 10.5 mo old male bulldog. He
had bilateral conjunctivitis a couple of weeks ago which resolved with
dexamethasone eye drops.

about a week later, out of the blue, his left eye had what appears to be cherry
eye (looks just like all the pictures on the web). i gave him the
dexamethasone eye drops and the cherry eye went away over night.

then another week later (today) he was running around and being very active
and again, all of a sudden, got cherry eye, but this time in his other eye.

is cherry eye something that can come and go like this or does it sound like
something else?

thanks.

Answer
This is absolutely cherry eye and it can present itself as you've described. You're lucky in that it has retracted all by itself, so far. If it continues to go back on it's own, it will be ok. When it pops, crate the dog and keep him quiet until it goes back in. If you can keep him relatively calm for a few days between episodes, even better. Eventually, either it will stop popping or stay out in which case it will require surgery.
