Question

Daisy
Here is a little background on my 11 month old American Bulldog, Daisy. My husband and I got Daisy when she was 3 months old from a breeder in Mira Loma, CA. She didnt have papers(probably our first mistake!) but we fell in love! when she was 4 months old her front right paw swelled up, then her front left paw did and eventually all her paws were massive swollen. After numerious vets looked at her, we were sent to a specialist where she was diagnosed with HOD. (a joint disease that can affect large breed dog) she stayed there a week recieving 2 hyperbaric chamber treaments per day. she came home and fully recovered from the HOD. but is left with a torn ACL tendon in her back left knee. after her knee was tapped numerous time we were told she was going to need knee surgery know and again in a year. we finally said NO! after spending just over $8000 and saving our girl from death we just dont want to put her thru anymore surgery! so she takes a dose of Metacam every morning and seems to be doing ok. but the enevitable has happened and now her right back knee is becoming weak and she is having trouble with it. Since she isnt a year old yet and already weighs 105lbs, we know she is bound to have more problems in the future. I would love to hear about some surgery alternatives for our girl and also to see if this is something that happens often with this breed.
thanks for reading my story!

Answer
Wow - POOR Daisy and POOR you!  Yes, the HOD disease is common in dogs that are large and grow too fast.  That's why many companies now make a LARGE breed pup food.  ( it is lower than the regular pup food to slow the growth a bit)
Sorry you all have had this happen.
