Bulldog ACL problem

Question
QUESTION: I have a 70lb English Bulldog and had to take him to the vet this morning due to the fact that he could not bare any weight on his rear left leg. The night before I noticed him walking differently but he has able to lift his right leg and pee while bearing the weight on the injured leg. My Dr says there is swelling around the knee and are doing xrays to rule out fracture and dysplesia. They also gave him a pain kinning shot. Did anyone ever here of that. i tore my ACL twice and never needed a pain killer or shot, til surgery. I need some help. I am worried about my guy. Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Tony:  I  believe the " pain killer shot" was not a pain killer but an anti-inflammatory drug such as a steroid.

As far as the ACL area, or dysplesia, this can many times heal on it own without surgery... Rest and anti-inflammatory drugs can help the area to heal.  The Dog will have arthritis in this area in question.

As for  surgery, this can be helpful but the dog must be almost non-mobile for up to 6 weeks.  NO jumping or even walking up a step.  No steps at all.  Also, the dogs have the be crated when they have had surgery.... To ensure they don't jump up on anything when you are a work or sleeping.

If you decide to give the area a chance to heal on it own....let me know and we can talk dog foods and supplements that will help.

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your info. I just hung up with the vet and she sad there is so much swelling in the knee that she cannot properly diagnose if the ACL is torn. She "thinks" thats what it is. They want me to send him to the Ortho to be intubated for more tests. I feel bad putting him through this if its not necessary. He is not super active but is playful with my other dog. I also have stairs and have no prob carrying him till he heals. Do you think I should let the anti inflammitories run there course before doing anything hasty? Whats weird is he was able to bear the wait yesterday now he cant. Also she is concerned about slight hip arthritis/dysplesia possibly. This lady rambles off all these tests and things she want to do and I don't feel comfortable about it. Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Again:  I would wait a bit... The vets love to do test and increase the $$$$ out of your pocket.  It wouldn't hurt to wait and let the swelling reduce itself.  ( it will )
I would not put him " Under" just to see what is going on!  It the swelling doesn't go down in 2 weeks, then I may go that route.

Too aggressive for me!
You can also get a second opinion from another regular vet.  The ortho vet will want to stretch the leg and pull on it... That is why they want you to put him " under" ... They they and manipulate the leg a bunch... Boy, will he have pain after that!

As for the hip, no big deal... I think the vet is going overboard.
There are many vets that would say " Let's wait and see if the swelling goes down on it's own".
