Cat Scratching Up Leather Couch

Question
We have a 1 yr old, indoor, neutered male cat that is leaving scratches in our old but newly acquired leather couch. Repellent sprays have not been particularly effective. Can we trim his nails, if so, how?  Other suggestions?

Answer
Hi Bob!
Yes, you can trim his nails very easily.
I have 6 cats and alot of nice furniture that has never been destroyed by them, by keeping their nails trim.
There are cat nail clippers, but I find just regular, "human" nail clippers much easier.
You may want to have someone hold your cat.  Take one paw at a time, and press on the pad to push the claws out.  Clip off up to where the nail curves.  The pink that you will see is called the "quick." This is a vein in the nail.  If you cut into the quick, the nail will bleed.  Be sure not to cut into the quick.  If by accident, you do, and it does happen, pack a little corn starch onto the nail.  This will cause the blood to clot, which will stop the bleeding. Here's a website that may help you....

If you feel uncomfortable doing this, and/or your cat is not cooperative enough for you to handle him during this process, your veterinarian will be more than happy to clip his nails for you.  Nail trims should be done every 2 weeks to deter destructive behavior.  A nail trim at a veterinary office usually costs approximately $5 per trim.
I hope this helps!
