Age of Puppy When Leaving Litter

Question
I am interested in getting a Boston Terrier puppy and have researched the breed and breeders, etc.  The breeder I am presently working with seems like an excellent breeder when it come to socialization of her pups, health, genetic soundness etc.  But she has now told me that she wants me to take the pup at 6 weeks of age. When I questioned whether this was too early, she said that her pups were  weaned at about 4 weeks, removed from the mother  and then from then on she gave them one-on-one attention on a daily basis and that this made them bond with people well, and that maybe pups left alone all of the time with their littermates would need 7-8 weeks before they could leave. How do you feel on this? I have heard that earlier than 7 weeks could make for a very nervous pup that has separation anxiety issues. I had a dog with separation anxiety and frankly never want to go through that again!  Unfortunately, there are not a lot of Boston breeders in CA and so I would have to go with someone out of state if I don't go with this breeder.

Answer
I am not sure of the laws in CA, but here in PA it is ILLEGAL for puppies to be sold under 8 weeks of age--people still do it, but I don't recommend getting puppies when they are too young.   The idea is for them to have as much interaction with their mother and littermates so they are more social.  And I know many breeders keep the puppies until 12 weeks of age.

What I would recommend is asking the Breeder for references of people who have bought puppies from her and call those people and see how the puppies turned out.

The separation anxiety is most likely not from leaving mom too young, but the things that you do at home.  For example, you should put your dog in the crate 15 min before you leave and pay him or her no attention and do not make a big fuss when leaving.  When you get home, do NOT go to the puppy first thing....take 10-15 minutes and do something around the house so the puppy calms down.  If you leaving and coming home is a big ordeal, the dog will develop anxiety wondering and waiting when s/he is getting that big reception.
