QUESTION: Hi marie, Its Linda the worrywart. It just came to mind I dont know what is the right age for heartworm meds and advantix for flees and tics.i heard its taken at different times if the area in wich you live is prevalent,I live in Northern new jersey, some deers around, and pups had 2 sets of shots when can i take him to the park and be ok with getting sick from other dogs, theres this new problem around here heard it only once on the news about a dog flu thats very dangerous to them some are in jeopardy of dying and theres no cure ,did you hear about this.geewiz what else is there to fret about .Im sure there will be something. Thanks again ,linda

ANSWER: Hi Linda!  I would wait on the dog park... Please try to stay in a area that is not overly populated by dogs..... I am more worried about the viruses and bacterias in the poop.  Give him 5-6 more weeks before you go to any large dog areas ( dog parks).

Next, the heart worm meds should be started now.  Also, you can start the monthly flea now or wait 3 more weeks.  In the mean time, you can make your own home made flea spray - All Natural and safe.

From the Drug Site:

Heartgard and Generics can be used from 6 weeks in pups, as can Revolution. Sentinel and Interceptor can be used from 4 weeks of age and 2lb weight in pups. Most veterinarians will encourage you to commence heartworm prevention in your puppy before 8 weeks of age, depending on the when they were born in relation to the heartworm transmission season. Your veterinarian will be able to advise when the heartworm transmission season in your area is, and when the best time to start your pup on preventative medication is.

Hope this helps -

Answer
Hello Linda and Riley-  the rabbit poop won't hurt him... it is the dog poop you need to keep him away from, because he hasn't had all the immunizations yet.  ( no dog parks)

As for the food changes... It takes some time when you have a food switch over.
YOU can go back to the Science Diet and mix it with the new food brand that you purchased.  YOU can do this mix for few months, if you would like .  It won't hurt to do a mix on this little guy.
The NuVET will help him as it build a blood level in his system.

YOU can give him some canned pumpkin on one day and then the next day give him some Metamucil Cookies / Apple Flavor Wafers.  They sell them at Walmart in the health section.  I would give him 1/2 of a cookie/wafer per day.  ( it will firm up the poops)
Also, don't feed him too late at night.  Switch his feeding around so you are feeding him at 4-5 pm ( if possible)... Can you do an early morning feeding and a late afternoon feeding?  Are you home or working very late.... He can eat 2-3 x per day...

As for the shots ( immunizations), I don't like them too close... That's just me, I don't know if there is any major science in regards to my opinion.

Anyway, change the feeding around and he May NOT poop in the crate at night.

Talk to you soon - Keep me posted!!!
