Question
Dr. Gifford,
Hello! I am writing because I have just received my first interview invitation (for Virginia-Maryland). I am still waiting to hear from the other two schools to which I have applied (Auburn and University of Pennsylvania). I would just like to know if you have any advice for the interview process, or if there was anything you didn't know going into your interview that you wish you had. Thank you very much!

Answer
Congratulations! This is very exciting. Great question too.
The best advise I can give you is to relax and be yourself. I interviewed at two schools(Cornell and Tufts) and they were very different. In spite of what you may have been led to believe, the schools are not just looking for candidates that live, breath, eat, sleep and are otherwise all consumed by   animals. They are looking for the well-rounded candidate. Of course, some animal experience is important. However, today's veterinarians are very diverse individuals who are interested in local and international animal and public health issues, environmental issues, public policy issues, animal rights issues, etc. Heck, I had music and English majors in my vet school class at Tufts! And they became excellent vets!
Be yourself and let them know that you are very confident you will be successful in vet school. If you believe it, they will too!
Good Luck!
Dr. G.
