Question
Hi, I have a healthy 48lb. two year old beagle mix (until a few days ago). She was playing in the house and I took her outside to play ball which she loves but just laid on the ground. She was having pain moving so she just laid around.Several hours she got worse and refused to drink, couldn't poop or pee but her appetite was OK. She loves chewing her toys and one hard rubber chew toy she tore apart. The next day I took her to the vet and he said she was fine and to give it a couple days on bland food. I insisted on x rays to see if she ingested any of the plastic which may be causing an obstruction. He took but said any plastic has made it to her large intestine which did have small dark spots in her stool. He said she really had to poop, but said no to a suppository. Day three and she is in more pain. I take her for very short walks to get things moving but she wants to lay down. Now her stomach is just screaming. I have been mixing 10 parts water to one part of the bland can food the vet gave me to make a kind of soup so she will get her water intake. She has pooped  once in the last three days and very little. Day three she went out side and peed while laying on the ground.

Answer
Truly I think this dog needs to be put under once and cleaned out! She needs to have an enema under an anesthetic so it isn't painful for her.

A note on xrays... we had a black lab that ate a golf ball and had all of the symptoms you mention. We took an xray and it was very difficult to SEE the ball, or the outline of one, if the ball, or object is WAY UP IN THE SMALL INTESTINE. Just want to give you a heads up with that.

If she isn't better tomorrow, and has passed a normal amount of stool, I would take her back in and have either another xray done or have her put out and given the enema. She will feel much better.

If she doesn't pass this object, surgery is the next step to save her life. If she is just constipated with backed up stool, then she needs the enema under a sedative.

That would be what I would do if it were my dog. Then no more balls that she can chew up!
