Question

Hiedi
My dog whom is three years now-part Australian Shepard/Lab mix-Named Hiedi has been suffering from Ear Allergies-mostly in her right ear. Smelly, dark discharge, rubing her head on the carpet, chewing her toe nails/feet and rubbing her ear with her food and shaking/flabbing her head constantly. My parents threaten to take her to the pound because of her allergy problem. We took her to the feet twice...$164 dollars later it worked untill the antibiotics and ear flush evaporated.  Now we use a generic over the counter treatment 3 times a day and clean her ear out with tissues, we also give her generic human tyenol dipped in p-nut butter so she'll swallow it. I've heard it ain't good to do that but what other options do we have? I really would be heart-broken to see her in the pound, Will the people there actually care for her health problems? Will she get adopted?  I don't know what else to do since we tryed everything, i can't afford constant medical treatment and so far the Vets we had have been doing the same thing and not isolating the cause of her allergies or doing anything that would help in the long run so that we can avoid taking her-when we don't have the money too. Please help.  I enclosed a picture of my dog (as you can see her right ear is droopy because of her problem). So that it may help with your suggestions. Kim :)

Answer
Most of the time dogs get ear infections because of skin allergies.  The ear is made of skin.  So this dog may need to be on steroids to quell the inflammation.  DO NOT GIVE TYLENOL.  The steroids will help with the skin problems, too.  In addition, the vet needs to do a microscopic analysis of the goo in the ear to see if there is an infection or not.  Then they can get the right medication to use.  Fins a vet that has a video otoscope in your area and give that vet a chance to properly treat the ear canal.
