Question

Princess
Hi Dr. Huang. I have a cat who i adopted when she was maybe 4 weeks old.
she was found in a car engine, so my husband and i took her in.  she has
always been a little skittish, but when we recently tried to introduce another
cat into the family she completely freaked out and attacked my husband.  We
love princess, but are afraid of what she might do if we ever have a baby.  she
really can be sweet if we don't get to close.  We have a stable home
environment and have given her plenty of toys and snacks.  Is there
something else we should be doing? or is there something wrong with her? I
don't understand why she has this bad behavior because we have been
nothing but kind to her and have only used a spray bottle to train her out of
some bad habits, like crawling in the fire place, we would never harm her. But
she doesn't seem aware of that.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Kazia

Answer
Good Day,

The displaced aggression in response to the new cat and the aggression shown towards you in general is something relatively common.  I have had good luck working with these cats in an attention deprivation program.  This involves separating her to a room of your home and going in for an hour a day.  For the first week during this hour bring a book and read, completely ignoring her.  No matter what she does do not give her attention, however fill her food and water and you may set down a treat or two.  The following week if she is seeking attention, give her one pet, no more.  Each week over a 4-6 weeks period you can increase the amount of attention she is given as long as she does not react badly.  If she growls or swipes, stop attention immediately.  This must be tailored to the reaction of the individual cat, so the times listed are just a base guide.  Never force attention upon her, the goal is for her to seek it.

Not all cats will respond to the same treatment protocol so please feel free to write back with her progress.
