Uteris infection

Question
I took my 16 year old to the vet and he did an ultrasound on her.  She has never been fixed.  He said that she has a very serious infection in her uteris and ovaries and they should be removed.  He said her urteris is filling with mucus and that if it's not removed it will eventually explode.  Can you shed any light on this situation?  She's in perfect health other than this.

Answer
This is called a PYOMETRA and yes, it is very serious and if she does not have surgery she could die from sepsis (overwhelming bacteria infection).  And if the discharge is not draining (closed cervix) you do not want to wait to have surgery.  Antiobiotics alone are not sufficient.
