megaesophagus...is my dog dying?

Question
My lab is 6 yrs. old. He was born with megaesophagus and a pouch that developed off the side of his esophagus. Eating and drinking have always been an issue, but he has maintained a healthy 70-74 pound weight. Recently his regurgitation has changed in it's odor. It smells horrible and permeates the whole house. The smell is definitely coming from his mouth and not body odor. The smell is even in the water he throws up. It's as offensive as if he rolled in a dead animal. His temp was 102.6 a week ago, but is now around 100. He doesn't like it when I lay next to him to pet and love on him. His eating has changed a bit, but that is a hard thing to base anything on because of the inconsistencies in the past. His fur is shedding more than usual. Does it sound like he is dying?

Answer
Lynda,
if your dog has this many changes that he is going through with a condition as serious as this, he needs be taken in and have the vet look him over. He may have more than a pocket going on. He may have some food impacted in the pocket or another one started. Impacted food smells just like a road kill.

He needs to be seen and have his esophagus examined or xrayed to see what is going on.
His temperature dropping low is not a good sign either. The normal temp of a dog is 101.5.
He just really needs to be seen and soon.
