avocado poisonous to cats?

I have read that avocado is poisonous to cats and dogs.  but they make vegetarian cat food with avocado.  who is right?  my cat loves avocado and i'd like to give him some, but definately not if it will make him sick!

Hi Rachel!  Avocados are indeed poisonous to cats.  I am unsure of the food you are refering too, but, I'll give you my opinion.  Any food that would be a vegetarian diet for a cat is not an appropriate food.  Cats are natural born hunters.  They need meat in their diet.  They can't live without meat and any food that would state otherwise is a food that should not be on any pet store shelves.  As humans have the FDA (food and drug administration) dogs and cats have their own administration.  Alot of these foods have not been okayed by them, as a lot of foods and medications have not been okayed by the FDA, yet we still can easily obtain them on grocery store shelves. I would stick to a regular cat food for your cat.  Cats need meat to thrive and to live long happy lives.
