Nylabones

Question
I have an 8 yo long haired Chihuahua (12 lb) that I am trying to regulate food intake. I give him half a chicken buddy (pure chicken jerky) about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide after he poops and his first pee. also after long walks or rides in cars. I have started giving him a small nylabone every day but he seems not to be eating his food as much and not pooping as much.

How often should nylabones be given. I've asked the web a million ways and can get no answer.

Frustrating.

Help me please...he is starting to get a slight bit overweight and has developed a small lipoma (I hope). My roommate and I have totally stopped feeding him any scraps or lick a bowl - nothing - 4 days ago.

Answer
Nylabones are better for younger dogs. I think if an older dog isn't eating as well then it's time to look at his teeth. The nylabones may have loosened a tooth that is now bothering him.
The amount of chicken buddy you are giving him is too much for a senior dog. He will gain weight with a 4" strip. It is good that you have stopped all table scraps. Those alone will make him gain weight.

If you are going to give him a nylabone at all, don't give him more than  one a month. He really doesn't need any of this stuff.
We always recommend that you give the dog his own food as a treat. If he eats dry food just carry some kibbles with you and give him those when he does his morning business. He won't know the difference.

Just subtract the amount from his total amount of food for the day.
This will help him lose weight and make him and you happy that he is still getting his treats.
Try it and let me know how it goes.
