Question
hello Dr. Christina Chambreau, we're asking you a question in regards to our kitty. Her name's Zoey and she's a little over a year old. She became pregnant and begin to notice changes (obviously) in her appearance and habits, normal i believe. Before her pregnancy, she was a really little kitty, didn't weigh much at all. During her pregnancy, she ate a good amount more then she used too, and would lounge around a lot more. She did throw up a couple times i remember (showing signs of morning sickness?). During the past day or two, we noticed her vast change in appetite, eating less if anything at all. So far, we thought everything in her pregnancy was going as planned. At this point, she's probably been pregnant for a good two months maybe (i have a bad memory) but she was really round and ready any time now. This morning is where our problems began.
It was a beautiful day out and we always used to let her outside, so considering her an outdoor get, we let her get some air today but instead of wondering around, she disappeared into a crack under the deck where she lied motionless for a good amount of time. We grabbed her and brought her inside thinking it was her beginning to go into labor. We built her a spot out of a cardboard box and some blankets to have her kittens and placed her in there. We left and came back to check up and she moved out of the box and under the bed, which seemed very unusual to me at least. My thought was she wanted to give birth in private. From that point on, we laid by her side for a good two hours and patted her, stayed by her side. Around 9 o'clock, she began whining every 20-25 minutes or so, us thinking she was having her contractions. She would get us and really yell and moan and whine and it would last for about 20 seconds and then nothing, she would lay MOTIONLESS and rest. She was very very quiet and still, her tail was free, her head had no strength, started to worry us. I begin to notice blood coming out of her vagina during a few contractions and thought it was getting closer to the delivery but by 11:00, nothing has happened. I walk out of the room to come back in with Kayle holding our kitty, crying, saying she can't hear her breathing. I grabbed our things and rushed the cat to a Vet no more than 5 minutes up the road, drove into the ER, where they performed CPR and later came out to tell us she didn't make it. We love Zoey and we just buried her and I've done a lot of research and we just want to know what happened? How was everything going to plan and then...nothing? Maybe everything wasn't going to plan. Maybe her hiding under the deck and again under the bed were signs of her knowing she was passing and she wanted to do it in private and in peace like my research suggests? And if that being the case, how did she know she was going to die? Did she know the pregnancy might have been complicated and it was passed helping? I just can't seem to find any answer and I'm hoping you can help us out with anything you may think of. Thank You so much doctor and please respond as soon as possible. Thank you

Answer
I am so sorry for your loss. there is no way to know what happened. Cats do not get morning sickness, so the vomiting was an indication she was not healthy.

There are so many cats being killed in shelters because people cannot keep them that I hope and pray you will immediately have any cat you adopt spayed or neutered. Only people who have studied about pregnancy, labor and kittens should be having kittens because these tragic things happen and either you check with the veterinarian a lot during the pregnancy (xrays at 45 days, blood work, check ups and calls for any problem) or you can have serious problems and even death.

I doubt that she knew her pregnancy was complicated (and maybe she was ill rther than that). The clinic who treated her would have a much better idea than I would.

for other animals, please check out the holistic approaches.
