Question
Dear Hilary--
I took him to the vet and they said  he was healthy, it seemed the sickness went away as fast as it came. I guess he ate something that didn't agree with him. I use advandage on him for flea control this is what the vet said to use til he is 12 weeks. And I bath him in Oatmeal Shampoo. I guess just like our little hunman babies, our puppy babies get upset tummies and feel bad too. Thank you so much for your help!

Hello
I have a 11 week old Lahsa Alpsa and last nite he started getting a diarehea. It does not have any blood in it that I can see, He has had 2 sets of his shots with the 3rd set due in a couple of days. He also threw up once in the nite and is not himself. He normally is full of life but since last nite just lays around. He has had upset stomach in the past and laid around the same way. When I take him out to go potty when feeling good he tries to grab everything so I don't know if he ate something that caused him to get sick or what. I  am worried sick about him. What could this be?

Hi Drema!  First I have to say, given the symptoms you have described, if you have given him any over the counter flea medications, get him to your veterinarian immediately.  Over the counter flea medications are known to cause these problems.  The only product that is proven safe is Frontline.
If you haven't put any products on him, it very well could be that he has eaten something that he shouldn't have.  I would highly recommend a vet visit, as it sounds as though he definately isn't feeling well from something.  I wish I could be of more help.  Your veterinarian may want to run a little bloodwork and possibly do an xray to be sure that all the blood values are normal and that there is nothing stuck in the digestive track.
Please keep me posted!

Answer
Hi Drema!  Oh, I am soooo happy to hear he is doing well!
Please don't get angry at what I'm going to say...
Advantage, I do believe was the cause of this upset.  All over the counter flea medications cause these types of reactions, to even siezuring and death.  The veterinarians and technicians that I work with have all started and signed, and got others to sign a petition that we are going to give to the Pennsylvania Veterinary Board to try get these flea medications off of the market.  I am not trying to insult your veterinarian in any way, so please know that.  Here in PA, we see these reactions constantly, and although it's unpleasant to say, there has been numerous amounts of deaths during the past few years (this spring being the absolute worse) due to these over the counter flea medications.  It has been said that the only safe flea products are Frontline and Frontline Plus.  They are very effective and are so safe, that third world countries use products made of the same ingredients to kill parasites in their drinking water.  I always feel the need to tell someone about this when their pet becomes ill after the use of one of the over the counter flea products.  Please don't take this the wrong way!  I have seen entirely too many animals siezuring uncontrollably until euthanasia is the only option and too many animals that have died from the severe effects of these products to not give you this information.  It concerns me because when a client comes into our office with a siezuring dog, they explain that they have used one of these products and the last time it was used, their pet had experienced the symptoms your puppy has experienced.  This is why the first thing I asked was if you had put flea medication on him.  You had described the classic symptoms.  Advantage, Advantix, BioSpot, Zodiac...ect...they all are known, at least in my area, to cause these problems.  Just to give you a heads up...
I wanted to tell you before when I replied to your question, that I have a little Shih Tzu!  Our boys are cousins! Lhasa's and Shih Tzu's are so much alike....except my little guy has a smooshy face hehe.
Give that little boy billions of kisses for me, and again I am so happy he is feeling better.
I hope the information I wrote about the flea products didn't offend you in any way, I just felt a need for you to know what the possibilities are with these products!
Have a wonderful week!
Hilary
