Female cat bleeding

Question
We have a three year old female cat. She has not been spayed (is that the proper term for girls?). She has also never been outside or in contact with another cat. For the last 10 days she has been bleeding from her vagina. She licks it all the time. She hadly ate last week so we took who to the vet. The problem is, she goes insane at the vet's so it is nearly impossible for the vet to inspect her. She gave us some sort of antibiotics but nothing much has changed. What is this bleeding about? Should we be worried?

Answer
Kat,

Yes, female cats are spayed.  Bleeding from the vagina either is commonly due to a female being in estrus (or heat).  But she could also be having an abortion or have a uterine infection or be giving birth.  (i realize she has had no contact with other cats but sometimes things happen and they don't tell you about the time they got out for a few hours...)

It is very difficult to examine some cats without anesthesia.  If her appetite is still down I would try to take her back to the vet.  Hopefully, it is nothing serious, but it is possible that it could be.  And if so I would splurge for the anesthesia or sedation to try and get a diagnosis.

Good Luck to you both
