Question
My 7 month old puppy had a seizure last week. I had no idea what was wrong with him until I took him to a 24 hour clinic and they told me that his pupils were dilated and wasn't responding and that he had had a seizure. I always let him outside to play in the mornings for about an hour and he comes back in for awhile. When he came in he acted strange, he was distant, we wouldn't eat or play with the family. He was shaking all over like he had been scared. He did this for awhile and then he acted really tired, like he had no strength what so ever. I have just been worried sick about him because it seemed like it took him 2 or 3 days to get back to his normal self. I would just like to know the way he is supposed to act- or if that behavior was normal, and also, why was he so distant, almost like he didn't know or care about us anymore?

Answer
If you are asking if this is normal behavior for a dog having seizures then yes, it is normal for them to be distant, disoriented and scared.

It is not normal for a 7 month old puppy. If his seizures come often, or are really bad, then he will need to be on medication for life. Some dogs have them once or twice and never again. Epilepsy shows up early in life so there is a good chance he may be one of the life-time medication dogs.

Some vets feel it is better to let them deal with one -not to often seizure if they are far and few in between then to put them on medication for life.
It all depends on the dog and the seizures.

So keep an eye on him and if he has more then take him into your regular vet for an evaluation.
I hope that he doesn't continue to have them. Maybe that will be his only one.
Let's hope so!
