My boyfriend's father had just recently took their female german sheperd to the vet to get spaid because the male dog (not nudered) were caught in the act. Do the vets make sure that the dog is not pregnant before the surgery takes place?  The reason why I am asking you is because the female dog seems as if she is thickening out and is heavier than what she normally appears to be.  Is it just me, or could there be a possibility of her being pregnant?  And if so, would she be harmed in any way because of her previous surgery?  I'll be awaiting any info you can give me concerning this topic.  Thank you for your time.

If she is spayed, SHE CANNOT GET PREGNANT PERIOD!. They remove the ovaries and uterine horns, so that is impossible.

You cannot tell if a dog is pregnant just by looks alone. That takes a few weeks to show up. BUT they can do a homone test to make sure.

good luck

Hi Ellen.  First off, thank you for responding so quickly.  But I don't think I was detailed enough with my question.  I'm aware that after a female dog gets spayed, she no longer can get pregnant.  But let me start again from the beginning.  The male and female started to mate, both were not fixed at that time.  So two weeks later the female dog, (who we suspected could have been pregnant), was taken to the vet to get spayed.  Is there a possibility that she could still have the puppies even after the operation?  And if so, is that harmful to her or the pups in any way?  Thanks again for your time, I'll be awaiting your reply.

~No puppies after the operation, they would have been aborted. A normal pup cycle is 58-63 days for gestation. You would have needed an ultrasound to look for heartbeats since an xray only shows puppies after day 40-45 for bone densities.    Your vet would have told you if he/she saw embryos in the uterus.

I hope this clears it up better.
