Sedation for Grooming 22# cat

Question
I would love to find something safe to make my cat either very calm, sedated, or snoozy.  The reason is that he is like a budda kitty.  Big orange male tabby about 21 pounds, very fun presonality, but is not able to groom himself well.  Our other two girl kitties will play with him, but don't help him groom.  I have had to send him to the vet to get groomed because his fur gets really long and then matted around his nether regions.  When that happens the smell of urine follows him like Pig Pen's dust from the Peanuts cartoon.

I want to find something to calm him for home grooming.  I have tried catnip, and I can get everything but his underbelly and his nether region, where it is needed most.  Is there something I can give him that is OTC?  Or maybe there is something my vet can prescribe?

Answer
Hi:  I understand your concern.  Your vet will not order something for sedation at home.  They will tell you it is too dangerous to use at home.  ( they are correct).... Your cat will need something very strong in order for you to do this.

There is nothing over-the-counter that will give you what you need.

Just have the vet or a groomer - Do a "lion cut" on him 2 x per year.
This is a shave down with a full face and full tail...LIKE a lion.
It is cute!  ( 2 x per year should do the trick)

Best wishes!!
