Question
Hi, we have a 6 yr old male doxi that is still marking his territory by peeing all over my house.  He was nutured at 6mo. of age.  I have taken him to our vet and she could not find anything medically wrong with him.  We also have a 14yr old female doxi that he get's along with.  We have put in the electic fence in the house because he was ruining it.  They still have the entire kitchen and dining area with large patio glass doors to see outside, they have a ton of room, but he is marking everywhere.  He even get's on the table just to pee on a napkin.  He is peeing on the legs of the chairs and on shoes.  We love this dog very much but I don't know what to do, I now have to replace my hardwood floor because of the stains.  We cage them at night and he pees in his blanket.  He was purchased from a pet store.  We have also tried litter box training him and he pees on the side of the box, not in it.  We have set an alarm clock to let him out every hour and have cut his water down, I think he is peeing just to pee, not really having to go.  Do you think this is a psychological thing and will we be able to correct him of it?

Answer
I would recommend checking a urine sample to rule out any urinary tract disease, including crystals, inflammation and infection....this does not sound like he is medically normal to me.  A trial of an anti-inflammtory called Feldene, may be of benefit as urinating that often is not even usual for an un-neutered male.  However, he should have blood work checked first to make sure he has normal kidney function.  Also consider a bladder x-ray to rule out stones or abnormal urinary tract.

If the urine is normal and the Feldene hasn't helped, then a veterinary behavioral consultant would be your best bet.  This will take a lot of time and patience to correct.
