Siberian cat

I have a friend that has a male Siberian cat that has knots in his
fur/coat. What causes the knotting up; all over the cat. She is
planning to get him shaved in spring. Is there anything else that
can be done???  Thanks, Lisa

Usually matting is caused from itching, so that needs to be treated also.  The cat rubs the hair and that causes it to tangle up.  Shaving the cat is the best thing to do.  That may require an anesthetic to do, so try andhave it done at a vet's office.
