Sudden onset of accidents

Question
Hello Dr Fry.
I have a 16 month old Lab who has been housetrained for well over a year - the last few nites however she has had "accidents" in our living room while we were sleeping. In each case she was brought out the nite before at her usual time as well as the following morning. Her accidents were very runny and covered a large area. Nothing has changed in her routines as far as food goes. The only thing variation I can think of is that she spent a day at a salt water beach the other day and spent alot of time in the water so I'm sure she ingested alot of salt water and whatever she may have scrounged out of the tide pools.

Does this sound like she has an infection of some sort that would need a Vets attention or could it just be a temporary "hiccup" from the salt water?

Answer
I would recommend taking a stool sample to the vet to rule out any intestinal parasites.  In the mean time you can feed a bland diet of boiled burger or chicken and rice PLUS plain yogurt....no reg dog food.  You can also give peptobismol or kaopectate to help with the diarrhea....1/2 of the human adult dose.  If the diarrhea is not improving in 2-3 days, get her to the vet.
