chihuahua lost toe nail

Question
My little 4 pound chihuahua injured his toenail the evening of 4/16, the vet had to remove it, removed 4/17. I was told to I could take off his bandage today. I asked if he should have antibiotics and was told no. I have researched on the internet and it states dogs are usually given preventive antibiotics. Should I be concerned that he is not on antibiotics? Should I clean the area and rebandage? Should I use something like neosporine ointment? How long does the area usually take to heal? Will he re-grow another nail? Should I keep him in the house and limit his exercise? Thank you!

Answer
It depends on how the toe looks as to whether or not antibiotics are dispensed.  Usually fresh injuries are fine to just clean, apply neosporin and keep bandaged for a few days.  Yes he should grow another nail, but it will take weeks.  And it would be a good idea to limit his exercise for a few days to allow him to recuperate.
