Question
My rattie was bit by my dog. It only cut his foot, I think. There are no
24 hour vets in my area. What should I do?

Answer
Hi there!  Are we talking about a rat?  Or are we talking about a Rottwieler?  If this is a rat, just be sure to clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria.  Be sure to keep his cage extra clean so the wound will not have a chance to become infected. Clean the wound everyday for about 5-7 days to keep it bacteria free.
If this is a Rottwieler dog or any other dog breed, clean the area with hydrogen peroxide and apply neosporine to the area. Be sure NOT to use the "new and improved" version of neosporine, as this has harmful ingredients.  The old, original neosporine will be safe. This can be applied to the wound twice per day along with cleaning it out for about 5 days, and there should be improvement by this time.
If, by Monday,or anytime there after, (reguardless of species) you see any swelling in the area of the wound, pus or blood discharging from the wound, this would be indicating a possible infection and veterinary care would be needed for antibiotic treatment.
I hope that this helps and please feel free to ask me any other questions you may have!
