Question
Hi,

I was wondering if you know how a dog makes its whining noise - I have always heard that no one knows how exactly a cat purrs, but I can't decide if my dog's whining is coming from his nose or his throat.  Do dogs have vocal cords to make noises like that or does it come from somewhere else in the dog's head?

Answer
Hey Lee,

Yes, Dogs do have vocal cords. A dog's vocal cords makes  sounds such as whining, howling and barking. Because a dog's communication methods are much simpler, and there aren't very many different sounds a dog can make, a dog's vocal cords are much thicker and less sensitive. As a result, they are not easily damaged by continuous vibration.

Hope this helps,
