Question
My 9yr old pitt-bull was running wide open and tried to run up the stairs on my porch.
He missed and crashed hard into the post and stairs. He cried for a few minutes.
He started to limp he is putting weight on his back leg very lightly. I have given him an advil.
I am trying to keep him unmobile and calm. His back leg is swollen around the lower joint.
The only time he is seeming to be hurting is when he is tryin to get up or climb.
Is there anything i can do to make him more comfortable while he heals?

Answer
First of all, please NEVER give a dog Advil. Advil is Ibuprofen which is highly toxic and deadly to dogs. It will make his kidneys shut down. You can use plain, buffered aspirin on dogs but only one pill for 30 pounds.

Secondly, this sounds like a pretty serious injury which means he needs to see a vet right away.
He most likely damaged his knee joint pretty bad. He may have torn his knee ligaments which is a very common injury to dogs that do things like this. Some dogs tear them jumping off of couches and some do it running across a flat fields, if they turn too fast or stop wrong.

Now if you mean the "ankle" type joint lower down that's different, but he still needs to see a vet. He will give you the correct anti-inflamitory medicines for his knee and give you instructions on what to do to help him.

These injuries generally require surgery but ask your vet about non-surgical recovery.
In the meantime, cage rest is good. Or in the house in other words.

Call your vet today and make him an appointment.
