Large dog limp

Question
I have a large 1/2 Great Dane and 1/2 Kelpie, "Butkus" He woke up Friday morning with a limp. He is 9 months old, very strong, and he plays and jumps, like a Jack russel!

There is no sign of injury, has not been hurt, hit, or fallin... etc... When I examine his leg, pressed up on shoulder, elbow, paw, etc... he shows no sign of pain. There is no swelling anywhere.

He is eating, playing, doing all things normally, but is limping badly on his front left leg. When he stands still he will hold it up.

What could this be? Could this be some sort of back problem? Hope you can help.

Thank you,
Karen

Answer
Karen,

Best bet is to get him to the vet tomorrow for an exam and x-rays.  He could have panosteitis, which is somewhat common in large breed puppies.  He may have a shoulder problem.  Most likely not a back problem.  Lyme Disease could cause limping as well.  Make sure he rests today.

Best wishes,
Dr. Fry
