Question

Sir,

I have a White Female Labrador Retriever. She is 4 1/2 Years old (Born in July 2005). Of late, she has had a red eruption (similar to a rash) which was at first localized to an area near the tail but has now spread to large portions on her back, neck and ears. As a result, she has a tendency to scratch these areas frequently which results in contusions. Also, when the areas affected by this rash are stimulated (either by her scratching or an occasional pet or tickle), she tends to beat her hind leg as if in response to this stimulus.

One more thing. She was mated in November 2007 under doctor supervision and experienced care. The action was successful resulting in the birth of 8 healthy pups. But, the itching started right after her giving birth. It was first occasional, and hence was treated with nonchalance and neglect, a mistake on my part. The rash has now grown intensely which results in a lot of suffering on her part. I have even consulted
the vets here (I stay in Calcutta, India) and have followed everything they have said but in vain. The following list shows the names of all the medicines she has been treated to (although none have helped):

>> Wysolone : [Tablet]

>> Xevor (Levocetrizine) : [Tablet]

>> Hitek 1 ml (Invermectin) : [Vaccine] - this course has been repeated 3 times

>> Belamyl 2 ml : [Vaccine]

She is also given a de-worming tablet every 3 months as protocol. The doctor has also adviced an external application on her skin. It is a mixture of the following medicines (which also proves only to be a temporary allaying of the itchy sensation):

1) Baction-1
2) Lopermite (Tablet crushed to powder)
3) Hetrazen (Tablet crushed to powder)
4) Negasunt powder
5) Sulphur
6) Boric Acid
7) Coconut Oil

I am including an image file of here latest prescription as on the 29th of March, 2010 as I am unable to decipher the doctor's hand-writing.

I would be obliged and very thankful if you could help me in solving this chronic problem as everyday seeing my dog suffer is like dying a little bit more.

Thank You.

Answer
This could be some type of skin parasite or a chronic bacterial infection.  Without a good diagnosis, it is impossible for me to tell you what to do on the internet.  You might want to get another opinion from another vet to see if they might recognize what is wrong.
