Question
QUESTION: Hi Marie,
I am so glad I found this website because my cat has a swollen lip (the bottom lip) and I took him to the vet yesteday but I need a second opinion. I would like to apologize in advance for my long message, I am just really worried about my cat's health.
So first of all, I think it important to mention that there are renevoations being done in my house (my parents are renovating the kitchen)and there is paint being used and other harmful chemicals Im assuming. This has been going on for more than a week and I noticed the inflammation on my cats lip a few days ago. It does not seem to get better, only more swollen with lesions and bad breath. Im not sure if one has to do with the other.
The vet said that he thinks my cat has an oral ulcers and that it is an IMMUNE MEDIATED DISEASE where the body cells are attacking normal cells. He said that there is no guarantee of correctly diagnosing the condition in this case and he recommended that I give my cat corticosteriods (hormonal medicine). However, he also said that side effects of this medicine include liver failure and diabetes. For this reason and others such as my cat being an older cat (10 years old) I was hesitant about giving him these pills. This is in addition to the fact that the doctor said that there is a chance he may be misdiagnosing the problem. The vet also took a general blood test from my cat and the results should be ready today.
I did not end up taking the medication for my cat and I decided to search a bit more about the issue. I searched online and from what I understand, my cat has "eosinophilic granuloma" also known as "linear granuloma." I read somewhere that it is an allergic reaction that can occur if a cat is bitten by a musquito or is exposed to harmful chemicals that cause the allergy reaction. SO maybe in this case, I should give my cat antihistamine medications instead of corticosteroids??
Also, I read online that by taking away the cat from a toxic environment might make the problem disappear. And since I cannot do anything about the renovations in my house, maybe I can put my cat in a Pets Motel for the rest of this week until the renovations are finished. What do you think?
Another option is to go to a veterinarian acupuncturist. I found this vet who does acupuncture on animals for different problems including the "linear granuloma" condition. I never even knew there is acupuncture for animals, but many people who tried acupuncture said it helped them so Im assuming it can help animals in the same manner.
Finally, are there some natural remedies that I can use on my cat instead of taking harmful meds? I read that echinasea may help to boost a cat's immunity system, but in this case where the immunity is attacking healthy cells, Im not sure if it is the appropriate medicine. Somebody told me it might help to put honey (because of its antiseptic properties) on the cats lip twice a day.
What do you suggest?

ANSWER: Hi Kate - Yes, you are smart to not do the strong steroid drugs on a senior citizen cat.  Your vet was also a very good vet!  Told you all the adverse reactions and even the possible mistaken diagnosis. Boy, that vet was great!

You have done your homework!  Good job...Please don't put the cat in a pet motel - more chance of STRESS and then the problem could get worse....
Here is my plan for you - All low cost and safe -

First off - for the next few days - give your baby some benadryl - about 15 to 20 mg / you can buy the liquid and give thru a syringe... You can also buy the pill form and break them into 1/2 dosages...I believe the pills come in 25mg tablets.

Next, Please order some NuVET Feline Formula - call now: they will send it out today and you will get it in a few days.... right to your door...VERY safe and Natural :

Call Joan now and order some - 19.99 for a 30 day supply. Give it a try and see:  You can also get the 60 count for 39.90... Ask Joan about the 15% off Discount... Make sure you talk to Joan, she is great!

Not sold in stores - Buy thru the manufacturer and save over the vet mark up.

I sure hope the NuVET Feline helps

Next, - I have a few more supplements that will help - all a quality Natures Sunshine Products - they ship out right away, too!  Always be careful about buying Quality in your supplements...Many in the supermarket and Walmart are poor quality and won't help much.

QUESTION: It just says Dosage: ADULTS 2-4 tsp (10-20 ml)every 4-6
hours. (not exceed 16 tsp, or 80
         ml/day)

         CHILDREN 1-2 tsp (5-10 ml)every 4-6
hours. (not exceed 8 tsp, 40 ml/ day)

Also, my cat was puking a few minutes ago. I hope it has nothing to do with his swollen lip...maybe its hairballs.

Answer
No - I am looking for this:  Tell me if you see this on the bottle...

Children's Benadryl (2.5 mg per mL)

I would want you to give 5 cc or 5 ml every 8 hrs...
Also, you may want another vet to take a look and give you another opinion on her condition.

best wishes..
