ivermectin for dogs

Question
I have too many dogs to purchase heartworm preventative. (I work at a no-kill shelter, need I say more?) 10 years ago, my vet gave me ivermectin that he "made up" himself.  I have since moved hundreds of miles away and would like info on going back to that.  I've heard you can buy cattle injectable ivermectin but need to know what the dose is.  Have been told that it's 1/10th of a ml for 10 lbs of dog.  Is this correct?  My dogs are heartworm tested and the only one I buy preventative for is the border collie mix, the rest have no collie in them.  Please advise.  Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi Donna!  Ivermectin is used in dogs to eliminate a parasitical problem like mites, scabies, demadex, mange, ect.  I have never heard of ivermectin injectable used for heartworm, although some heartworm products have ivermectin in them.  I'm not very comfortable telling you to use it when I never have before and have no experience with using straight Ivermectin for heartworm protection.  What about talking to your veterinarian about buying these products at cost?  They are very inexpensive without the profit mark up.  Since you are working for a rescue, your veterinarian just may be willing to help.
I hope this helps!
