Question
I have a daschound/poodle mix dog. He's the best dog I've ever seen. He got some tree sap on this butt about a week ago. I thought I got it all off, but apparently I didn't. He has licked it so much there is now a sore. I'm cleaning it and trying to keep him from touching it. Is there anything else to do to prevent him from making this worse?

Answer
Hi Keeley!  It sounds as though your little guy gave himself a hot spot from licking the area so much!
Here are some things to do...
Get an E-collar (elizabethan collar).  They are in shape of a cone and go around the dog's neck.  The rim of the cone is above the dog's head, therefore eliminating the dog from being able to lick/bite himself. Be sure not to leave your dog unattended with the collar on, as an injury could occur.  The e-collar should only be needed for about 5 days.
Clean the wound out with some hydrogen peroxide twice per day for about 5 days.  This will dry the sore out and eliminate bacteria growth.
Put some original neosporine on the sore twice per day for about 5 days.  This will promote healing.
If you notice at any point, pus discharging from the wound, this would indicate infection, and a vet visit would be necessary for some antibiotics.
I truly don't think you'll have a problem and with the above treatments, the spot should be healed up in no time!  The usual treatment is around 5 days, so if you don't see a major improvement in the sore by then, a vet visit would be necessary.
I hope this helps and if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!
