Question
Histiocytoma on dog, 13 yrs.
Histiocytoma on dog, 1
Our 13 year old Australian shepherd-cattle dog mix has a histiocytoma on her chin. We discovered it when it was bleeding. Vet did some scraping and said it was benign. She has been on an antibiotic for nearly a week. However, because of her age, we want to make sure this isn't something that might be or become cancerous. Would very much appreciate your thoughts on this. Image attached. Thanks!

Answer
Histiocytomas are rarely cancerous, but they can grow quite large and they do ulcerate.  You should have this removed.  In older dogs, I will sedate them so they are still and I will use a long acting local anesthetic placed around the tumor.  I use a laser to remove most tumors,  but a blade will work just fine.
