Dog seizures

Question
Hi!  My dog is about 2 1/2 years old. His is a lab mix, the vet said maybe lab spaniel and is short and stocky.  well he had his first seizure this past Thursday at 7:15 in the morning. He foamed greatly at the mouth and his limbs became very rigid and started violently going up and down, as he layed on his side.  I have already gone to our vet and they said his blood work was absolutely fine, and therefore could not tell us the cause. I have been researching on my own and I was thinking maybe dehydration spurred on the seizure b/c I don't think he had much water the day before and I had noticed he had thrown up his food 2-3 times in the last week or two (the color is brown-same color of the food he eats).  I also though about the fact that I apply Revolution to my dogs. I have been applying this medication for the last 1 year or so and haven't noticed problems previously but am being more aware of anything odd since that happened. My question is, is it possible to suddenly have an adverse reaction to a medication like revolution out of the blue even after they had been having it applied to their necks already for a year or more?  Also, my vet said there is no allergy test possible, but my question is, is that really true that animals cannot go through allegy tests, even though humans can go through such tests? I was wondering if my dog might be allergic to these topical medications (revolution says it has a rare but known side effect of muscle tremors and seizures which he has had both).  If I do try other routes to take care of flea, heartworm, and other type preventions for him, do you know of any alternative medicaions I could use that haven't been known to have side effects of muscle tremors, lethargy, or seizures?  Thanks so much. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Hi Jessica - glad you went to the vet for the blood work.  If he was dehydrated the vet would have seen this in his Blood Work - the red blood cells will show a sign of dehydration... Also, the electrolytes would be off.
It could be a reaction to the Revolution.  YOU could have had a batch that was a little stronger than usual.  The labs do control testing but you never know if there was a mistake made... This is just a long shot guess on my part.

This is from the company that makes Revolution - They talk about how it will effect the Flea or Tick's Nervous System... and how this goes thru your pet's blood...
So, what do you think?  It sure could cause a seizure...

Selamectin is a semi synthetic avermectin antiparasitic agent primarily used to kill adult fleas and ticks. It also kills ear mites, feline hookworms, feline roundworms and sarcoptic mange. It also prevents heartworm infection.

It works by interfering with the nervous system of insects and some worms, resulting in death.

Selamectin is a topical solution that collects in the oils of the skin and in the hair follicles. It is absorbed into the body and circulates through the blood stream.

Also, your lab should be taking NuVET Plus - This will build the immune system and help him to fight off fleas and ticks, too.
It is one of the BEST Supplements in the USA.

Here is the ordering info for NuVET plus -

Please visit my web site for more info... I use this on my own pets and many of my Doggie guests at our Hotel.

We have a great taste too...YUM yum chicken !!!!!!!!!!!

There is no allergy test for many medications.  The way we find out is by looking for adverse reactions.  Like the seizure your lab has experienced....seems to be a possible Adverse reaction to the drug.

Good Luck and Don't forget to get him on some Health Choices!

thanks
