Question
My dog first time bleeding, starting 2 weeks ago, she is bleeding a lot,  how long is bleeding and is heavy bleeding, this is normal?
What is the best diet at this time for her?
Thank you: Gabor Beszedes

Answer
The time period for a dog's estrus is 21 days total. They come into preestrus first, which is when they swell but don't bleed, for the first seven days. There may be bleeding at that time but not usually. Then they are in true estrus which is when they bleed and can be bred (but not at 11 months old) and that lasts for 7 more days. This is when you have to make sure she doesn't get outside.
They then have a diestrus which is another 7 days but is considered to last until the next heat in 6 months.

If this dog isn't purebred or going to be a show dog or breeding dog she should be spayed as soon as possible. You don't want unwanted puppies and the more often she goes into heat the more her chances of getting mammary tumors (breast cancer) rises with each heat she has. Just for your information.
