Question
Hello,
My puppy is a 8 week old Maltese. I purchased her from a breeder. When she came home she was doing fine she ate, she drank and she went to the bathroom well. At night she started coughing and sneezing and had a runny nose. I think she was sick before we got her because the breeder said my puppy's brother had the same thing and he died. We took her to the vet yesterday and she prescribed him antibiotics and had been started since. Last time she ate was before we took her to the vet and when we got home she seemed depressed and did not taste a single bite and she's still not eating. I tried to give her everything all types of can food, dry food but she just won't eat anything. We also gave her nutri-cal since she needs energy, we even tried to give her milk formula for puppies but she won't take it. She only went to the bathroom at night yesterday and today...particularly today she had water-like diarrhea and in it were what it looked like worms. We started her on worming meds today as well. I don't know what's wrong with her. How will I get her to eat??? (I don't like force feeding her, I'm scared I might hurt her)

Answer
You got some nutrical from the vet, so go back and get some A/D or canned puppy food and make it into a paste that you can put a finger-full on the roof of her mouth and make her swallow.
Hold her mouth shut after putting the paste on the roof of her mouth, not her tongue, then close her mouth and tilt her head up. This makes them swallow.
Make sure the food is a paste, almost like peanut butter in consistency.

Antibiotics along with worms would make anyone's stomach hurt so that is probably why she isn't eating.
You can give her some plain yogurt also to help with her tummy and to help keep some good flora in her intestines while she is on the antibiotics and worm medicines.
She should have been wormed before you got her. I hope she has had one vaccination at least.
Don't give her puppy milk formula at this point, you will only start some diarrhea.
Get her some canned and dry Science Diet puppy growth SMALL bites and put out a 1/4 of a cup of the dry for her to nibble but use the canned in the paste. Mix it with just enough water to make a paste then do the above feeding.
If she absolutely won't eat a thing or isn't drinking by tomorrow you better call the vet again.
She would have had diarrhea from the medicine but it's a good thing she did so that you saw the roundworms in the stool.
I would let the breeder know that she is selling wormy, sick puppies too.
Let me know how she does.
