Question
Dr. Huang,
I adopted a kitten from our local animal shelter. Lily is solid white with pink skin and has blue eyes. She is deaf but this doesn't seem to effect her. She is very happy. She has had all her shots and will be spayed soon. My question is this. She has started doing this very loud meowing. She doesn't do it all the time but could literaly wake the dead! I had thought she was in heat but this has been going on for almost 6 weeks now. How long are cats in heat? I've always had male cats and am not used to a female. Lily is 8 months old. She is playing and eating well. I also want to know, with her being deaf, will she have any kind of health problems I need to be aware of? She is strictly an inside cat and her sun bathing time is limited due to her pink skin. Thank you for helping me and any articles or books you can suggest would be great!

Thanks,
Robin

Answer
Cats are induced ovulators, meaning while they may go into heat the egg is not

actually released until mating occurs.  Because of this, if there is no male for a

female to mate with she may stay in a prolonged heat cycle.  Thus she can continue on with the loud cries and such that you have been experiencing from her.

I would suggest scheduling with your veterinarian to have her spayed.  They can also examine her at the same time to make sure that nothing is wrong, but if she is just in heat they can certainly help you with this.
