Question
hi hilary,

the last week or so i have noticed that my cat, jacob, has a little patch on his back where his fur has apparently fallen out.  it seems to be getting bigger; i just checked it this morning and it appears to be spreading.  at first i thought maybe he just got into a fight with another cat and lost a little fur, but now i'm worried that it is some sort of skin condition.  any thoughts on what it might be?  the exposed skin looks a little dry and shows no sign of new fur growing in.

thanks so much,

holly

Answer
Hi Holly. There are many skin ailments that can cause hairloss. Since the exposed skin is dry, I would definately think that this could be an allergic reaction to something. Have you used any new cleaners, detergents, ect? Food allergies are very common as well. Have you changed foods recently? If so, this could be causing an allergic reaction.
Hyperthyroidism is a disease that many cats develop, in which causes hairloss as well.
I would definately recommend a physical examination by your veterinarian to ensure that there is no Hyperthyroidism present, or any other ailments that are in need of treatment. If this is an allergy, your veterinarian may be able to prescribe a low dose steroid to clear the reaction up.
There is a condition of the skin called Feline Eosinophelic Granuloma Complex.  This is a skin allergy flare up from time to time because of a compromised immune system.  I have a cat with this and the symptoms your have described sound similar.  A skin biopsy would diagnose this disorder.  Either way, it would definatley be a good idea for you to get little Jacob to the vet to see what is causing this.
I hope this has answered your question and please feel free to ask any more questions you may have.
Please keep me posted as to how your baby is doing and give him some kisses for me!
