Question

Rowdy's belly
My granparents are big dog lovers and have this pure breed male golden retriever that is about 5 years old that has a weird almost rash like skin problem only on his underbelly where there isnt any hair. The rash looks similar to mange but it is confined only to his underbelly and has not spread to any of the other cats or dogs. The vet said it was mange and gave him shots and numberous creams and nothing has seemed to work. The dog went to a different vet and he didnt know what it was but made up his own concoction that was a liquid and smelled like rubbing alcohol. We used that untill it ran out and it actually got rid of all traces of this mange like rash. Now we are out and the vet with the miracle prescription retired and no one knows what he gave us and the dogs rash is back. Do you know what it could be???

Answer
In a golden retriever with this lichinification of the skin, I would first think of hypothyroidism.  This is very common in this breed and can cause this lesion. It is fairly easy to diagnose with a thyroid test and it is very inexpensive to use thyroid hormone replacement tablets.

If it is very itchy, then there may be an allergy present causing him to lick this area.  Certain other hormonal disorders can also cause this.  Have a vet that deals with lots of skin cases look at this dog and evaluate it for you.
