Shih tzu: thumb nail split to the quick

My Shih tzu's thumbnail has split to the quick.
She doesn't complain much but when I saw her licking and favoring that paw I found the problem.
I know it is hurting her a lot because she bit me when I touched it, and she doesn't do that.
I put an antibacterial ointment (J&J First Aid) and loosely warped and taped it.
I don't have much money right now and can't afford a vet.
Did I do the right thing or should just break out the plastic and go to the vet.
What should I do?

keep it clean, and no licking :)

watch it for infection such as redness, swelling and discharge from the area.  Nails do hurt and sometimes needs to be removed.

if $ is an issue, you can elect to watch it at home, or break into the CC for funds.
