QuestionMy 2 year old Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was neutered 2 weeks ago. After 10 days of restricted activity, we allowed off leash exploration of the backyard and resumed our 1-2 mile daily walks. Unfortunately, our pup now has scrotal swelling to about the size of a large lime. So far I've had conflicting advice on using warm and cold compresses and a recommendation to further restrict his activity for another two weeks. What would your best advice be?
Thank you.
AnswerThese swellings are almost always a blood clot. Compresses will do no good in that case. Usually the vet has to go back into the skin layers and pull the clot out.
I would have him look it over and see if that is the case. In almost 99% of the cases I have seen that was what it was. It's from a small vessel bleeding or leaking.
The only other swelling I have seen is from the dog licking it constantly.
