Question
Hi Hilary,
I have a male Siberian huski 'Bossi' who i love heaps and want him to be around for as long as possible. I just want to know the sort of tests I can get for him to detect any possible unforseen viruses/cancers, tumours so I don't find out to late. He seems fine and is only five years old but since looking over some husky sights noticed that tumours and cancers are common even in young huskies. I just want a total checkup to see if he is fine.

Answer
Hi Crystal!
I personally feel that a check up every 6 months, along with blood work every 6-12 months helps to ensure that everything is okay with our pets.
Most people do not feel as though blood work is necessary this often, but I personally do.  Blood work shows us how well all organs are working and what our pets' red and white blood cell counts are at, as well as platelets.  If any of these look suspicious, it can be handled immediately, instead of waiting for symptoms when, by then, it's often too late.
Every week to two weeks, do checks on your dog.  Feel for tumors.  If you feel anything suspicious, you will have found the lump when it first pops up, leaving more oportunity for it to be treated successfully.
I hope this is helpful!
Hilary
