hamster with diarrhea

Question
I have a 7 month old hamster that has recently been diagnosed with a tumor in her abdomen that is inoperable.  Her abdomen was very noticeably swollen, so she was sent for an ultrasound to diagnose the tumor.  She was put on prednisolone as of 3/6/08.  She's been reasonably happy and not in pain.  She now has diarrhea and her underside back end is a mess.  It has been a mess for a couple of days, although she has been eliminating solid stool.  Today is the first day we've seen diarrhea.  She still will eat and drink but has dropped about 40 g since diagnosis of tumor.  We will take her to the vet ASAP tomorrow; we do have a good one for our hamsters.  Is there anything I can do for her at home?  Could the diarrhea be caused by the steroids?

Thanks

Answer
Sorry to hear about her tumor. It is very possible that the steroid is causing the diarrhea but it also makes them drink a lot more water so that could be a contributing factor or the tumor pushing on her intestines too.

That's a real shame she got this so young.
You can wash her gently with a cloth and warm water to clean her up but for the stool I don't know what you can give her. I would suggest some drops of keopectate since it's just a clay base and should be ok for a hamster.
